TWD: Berry Galette
I have a lot of TWD to catch up on. Life became hectic and I inadvertently ended up taking three months off. I did bake in that time, but I didn't have the opportunity to make the TWD recipes or to blog. I am just now jumping back in and I was very happy to do so with this recipe...or so I thought. See, I made this galette on Saturday, thinking that we would be posting it next week and only now realized that it was actually due yesterday. So, I'm jumping back in and I'm a day late. Does it count if you think you are ahead of schedule?
Now, back to the real topic at hand: I absolutely adore berries. Every year I anticipate berry season and then I mourn its end when it is over. So, I was pretty pleased to see that today's assignment was a berry galette. Incidentally, I was also happy to see that this recipe was so simple (it took very little time to come together) and that it called for only a very tiny amount of sugar in both the pastry and the fruit.
My only complaint is that there was something missing in the flavor. I thought it was a little flat. Now, I have never had a galette before, so maybe this is normal. Unfortunately, I can only really compare it to pies and tarts, which might be unfair since it is an entirely different kind of pastry.

ReplyDeleteI liked the simplicity of this tart, but I do agree that a little citrus zest or some spices would have amped up the flavor.
Sometimes life has a rhythm of its own, but what matters is your intent. :-) Your galette looks beautiful. Perhaps, if the recipe would have called for a short precooking of the fruit, it would have released the flavor and the juices in the berries, and might have created more flavor. As it is, after making both a sweet and a savory galette, we tend to prefer the savory.

ReplyDeleteWelcome back - your galette looks beautiful! We added flavourings to the fillings of our galettes. I don't think we would have liked them as well if we hadn't.

ReplyDeleteIt´s the intention that counts... welcome back! I agree with the flavor being a bit flat. I did three different ones, and by far the best one was the one that had orange zest and honey in addition to what was specified in the recipe.

ReplyDeleteI've added under the berries a mixture of ground almond and sugar-vanilla-cinnamon and it was delicious.
Yes I agree, it was kind of sad in the flavor area. I'm thinking it was the crust. Maybe replacing it with another type of dough would help?
